New, all over again

Sometimes faith can be like a bar of soap, every time you think you have grasped it, it swooshes out of your hand. So it doesn’t hurt to be reminded of why we all believe in the first place.

Reading “Hebrews for everyone” by Tom Wright is doing that for me at the moment.

I am reminded today that the grand promise of the Bible is redemption. You can see it all through the bible, the rescue of God’s people, drawing them to God and to a way of being that was always intended for them, and then perfected in Jesus as he literally redeems us, paying the debt which separates us from God and bringing in new life.
And now we look forward to the time when he returns and everything is finally redeemed.

True peace between people, no separation from the love of God through sin, pride and selfishness. A true wholeness as the whole of created order, ourselves included, are restored to perfection – “He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” as it says in Revelation.

And in the meantime we look for places where His promise is already taking place and we strive to be part of it through loving even when we don’t feel like it and worshipping even when the day seems lost, because He is, and He will, make all things new.
